THE North-East is proud of its thriving business culture and, as the regional development agency, One NorthEast wants to play its part in inspiring, challenging, engaging and supporting it. The region is home to some of the country’s most successful and innovative companies, setting high award-winning standards which are helping drive forward the local economy. Quite rightly, we want to shout about their achievements and the Business in the Community’s North East Awards for Excellence 2007 give us the perfect platform from which do that. One NorthEast had no hesitation in once again sponsoring these high-profile and prestigious awards, which recognise responsible business practice and honour those companies which have made a positive impact on their community. Every year the awards go from strength to strength, with some past winners going on to enjoy national success – so the standards have certainly been set. I have no doubt the companies in the running this time around will enjoy similar success. Over the last couple of years they have really helped raise the profile of companies across the region, which in turn does wonders for its image. It is this increasingly positive image, and the calibre of our home grown-businesses, which have led to the region attracting major international companies, including Maersk Shipping, Berco, GE Money and SeaDragon. Luring companies such as these to the region has proved we can compete on the national stage, which is crucial if we are to bridge the £30bn productivity gap.
