RESPONSIBLE business practice is big with businesses in the North-East, as was evident at Business in the Community's North East Awards for Excellence gala dinner, held on Thursday at the Civic Centre, Newcastle. Attended by over 250 of the region’s senior business leaders and opinion formers, the event saw HM Revenue and Customs, Banks Developments, Erimus Housing and John Lewis Newcastle walk away with ‘Big Ticks’ for their responsible business practice. Meanwhile Home Group, Esh, Northumbrian Water and Tees Valley Housing had their previous Big Ticks re-accredited for continuing their good work. HM Revenue and Customs now goes through to the national finals of the awards, where Prince Charles and the former US vice president Al Gore will present the awards. Julia Cleverdon, chief executive of Business in the Community said: “Responsible businesses really understand the links between competitiveness and social cohesion.” “Companies that win a Big Tick in our Awards for Excellence are showing a commitment to collaborative action with real benefits for their business. “It’s about a lot more than improving the company’s image or writing a cheque for a good cause.” The evening, which focused on the environment and climate change, featured a startling reminder of the impact that business can have on the planet and a challenge from Business in the Community’s regional director, Karen Wilkinson-Bell, to become part of the solution by developing technologies and services to address the problem.
