THE largest education project under construction in the region is well on schedule – despite a long spell of bad weather. The 80-week build programme to construct the new Excelsior Academy in Scotswood, Newcastle, is underway with the steel framework beginning to make its mark on the skyline. Residents can now see the project taking shape and are able to get a feel for the size and scale of the academy, which will take students from West Gate Community College, in West Road, from next September. Contractor Surgo has put in place an environmental plan, aware of the impact a project of this type and size can have on the local community. Surgo contracts manager Jack Downey said: “I am delighted with the progress that the team is making on site at Norland Road. “The nature of the site and its changing land levels has presented some challenges during the first stages of construction, but as always we have risen to these challenges and I am happy to say that we are on track with our schedule of works. “Even the recent wet weather hasn’t affected our progress too much. “As work continues and vehicular activity increases in line with materials deliveries, we will endeavour to keep any possible disruption and inconvenience to a minimum and would ask the local community to continue with the support it has shown so far.” Before erecting the steel frame, Surgo carried out extensive ground works and land levelling. Working with the local authority, key members of the community and the residents’ association, Surgo has established a forum to discuss any issues which may arise. One site entrance has been identified to minimise disruption to the traffic flow, significant brick and concrete already present on site has been retained as in-fill material, and all site waste has been recycled. The academy has been designed to accommodate four “schools within a school” for 11 to 16-year-olds, each with its own specialism. A sixth-form wing will have places for 300 students. |
