Thanks to school

Jan 14 2007

By The Sunday Sun

The Geordie stars of returning education drama Waterloo Road have recalled their own school days.

Denise Welch and Jill Halfpenny each pay tribute to teachers who inspired them.

Denise - who plays lazy teacher Steph Haydock - said: "Terry Cudden, who was my drama teacher, was brilliant. If he hadn't encouraged me to go to drama school I don't think I'd have tried. I was going to teacher training college . . . so I do have a great deal to thank him for. If it hadn't have been for Terry I could have been Steph for real!"

Jill, meanwhile, goes back to her primary school in Gateshead for her role model.

She said: "I had a primary school teacher called Mr Nesbitt.

"I loved his enthusiasm and his love of drama. I think it is wonderful to be taught by someone inspirational as it makes all the difference and can affect your whole life."
