A strong lead

Feb 24 2008

by Ian Robson, Sunday Sun

KEVIN WHATELY’S background growing up on farms gave him the strength needed for action scenes.

In one episode of the Morse spin-off Lewis the story called for his character to save his colleague Hathaway, played by Laurence Fox, from a burning building.

He said: “I like all that though. I grew up on farms chucking bales of straw around, so I like anything physical.”

He explained how the scene, in one of the four new stories, was filmed in two parts.

He said: “Half of it was shot in the studio and half of it was shot on location in Jericho in Oxford. Out on location you could feel the heat 100 yards away.

“But when we were filming in the studio it got hotter and hotter as we were burning gas.

“We were on a very narrow staircase and although Laurence is six feet tall, luckily he is quite light.

“However, for the actual stunt bits with the flames I had to carry a stuntman. He was at least three stone heavier than Laurence.”

V LEWIS, ITV1, today, 9pm.
