Chieftans’ influence on famous folk

Mar 9 2008

by Ian Robson, Sunday Sun

GEORDIE star Sting reveals how he likes to listen to the traditional Irish band The Chieftains in a documentary on the group.

He is one of several celebrity fans recalling how the group’s music has influenced their own careers.

They include Rolling Stone Keith Richards, Elvis Costello, Sir James Galway and Andrea Corr.

For the last 45 years, the band helped to save Irish traditional music from disappearing and spread its sound and popularity across the world.

The Chieftains were one of the most popular bands of the Seventies but were dogged by accusations that they sold out traditional values.

V LEGENDS — THE CHIEFTAINS, BBC 4, Friday, 9pm.
