Northumberland combines a fascinating history with some of the most breathtaking scenery in the UK.
Northumberland is truly unique. As well as being the least densely populated county in England, it has its own National Park, its own flag, its own tartan and its own dialect. In Northumberland there are more castles open to the public than any other county, while Hadrian's Wall is the largest world heritage site in the country.
Northumberland is also home to Kielder, the largest man-made lake in Western Europe set in the country's largest man-made forest. It has its own food and drink and even its own distinct birds and wildlife. And it is the only British county with its own musical instrument - The Northumbrian pipes.
One of the major sponsors of culture10, Northumberland is the backdrop for a whole host of attractions and exhibitions throughout 2004.
Jane Blackburn, cultural co-ordinator to the Northumberland Strategic Partnership, said: "It is incredibly important for Northumberland to show its support for culture10. It is such a fantastic opportunity for the region to display the high standard of creativity here in the North-East and to bring it to a wider audience.
"We are keen to work with Newcastle and Gateshead, to attract visitors to the whole area - not just the cities. Northumberland has the ability to create heritage and our natural environment with cutting edge, contemporary design.
"We are already well on our way to dispelling the negative images of what the North-East is about, however there is still a lot of work to do. Through culture10 we have the opportunity to portray the region in a completely different light - as a vibrant, fresh and exciting place to be.
"We have a very fruitful and creative region and there is a huge amount going on in Northumberland. culture10 and Hotbed 2004 will ensure the county is firmly on the map. Through the strength of the Northumberland Strategic Partnership, we can stay ambitious and provide a wealth of exciting programmes to culture10."
The county will bring an exciting mix of historic and contemporary events to the Hotbed 2004 programme:
