South Tyneside is a special corner in the North-East that offers visitors so much to see and do. With breathtaking scenery and a backdrop of rich cultural heritage, major events and top attractions it offers a perfect choice for weekends away or day trips.

Proudly boasting natural beauty to modern art, ancient history to active pursuits - with a host of things to see and do visitors are guaranteed to find something to suit all tastes.

A host of attractions is on offer including the pioneering Souter Lighthouse that celebrates the region's maritime heritage.

Arbeia Roman Fort is one of the most important archaeological sites in Britain and the excavated remains and stunning reconstructions cleverly depict the life and times in Roman Britain.

The Venerable Bede, the founder of English history, lived and worked in Jarrow and the impressive Bede's World proudly commemorates his remarkable life. The refurbished South Shields Museum & Art Gallery hosts collections of social history, archaeology and natural science as well as interactive displays, whilst honouring South Tyneside's favourite daughter, Catherine Cookson.

The CitySightseeing Tours return again calling at major cultural attractions within South Tyneside and Sunderland. The hourly hop-on hop-off service will make 21 scheduled stops from Bede's World in Jarrow through to the Stadium of Light in Sunderland - and with tickets valid for 24 hours there is lots of time to take in a visit to an attraction or two.

Visitors looking for something more invigorating can try the Heritage Trail. Covering an area of 26 miles, the trail can be followed by either walking or cycling promoting breathtaking coastline, scenic countryside and many of the museums and leisure facilities.

For great family entertainment visit the Cookson Festival, with a variety of top performances and children's entertainment throughout the summer.

Tony Duggan, head of cultural and community services said: "Tourism is important for South Tyneside and crucial for the regeneration of the region. South Tyneside has a rich history and vibrant present and the cultural attractions are complemented by excellent sporting facilities, first class events, quality visitor accommodation and stunning coastline. The resort is an ideal weekend break or day visitor destination and there is certainly something for everyone to enjoy."
