Fashion at Belsay:

Jun 22 2004

By The Journal

See the rooms and gardens of neo-classical mansion Belsay Hall transformed by some of the most spectacular and avant-garde fashion designers of today.

The flagship exhibition, Fashion at Belsay (FAB), will showcase new art installations by the likes of Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, Zandra Rhodes, Paul Smith, Jean Muir and Agent Provocateur.

English Heritage invited 12 of Britain's most innovative and enigmatic designers to respond to the magnificent and historic backdrop. FAB gives some of Britain's best fashion designers the unique chance to indulge themselves in the world of contemporary art.

Each designer has created an installation in response to the historic surroundings of Belsay, fusing an atmospheric, futuristic environment within the imposing classical setting.

One of the most breathtaking exhibits is by Stella McCartney. Stella has chosen the grand and romantic Great Hall of the 14th Century Castle to present her most recent and ambitious direction. Mottling the stone walls with jewelled light, her "horse" for Belsay will astonish.

Famed for her flamboyant prints, she is an inspiration to both young and established designers. Zandra Rhodes needs no introduction. The juxtaposition of her extravagant approach with the rather formal and austere atmosphere of Belsay's Old Dining Room is sure to be a sparky alliance.

Funded by Arts Council England North- East and The Northern Rock Foundation, Fashion at Belsay (FAB) is the fourth major arts, architecture and design event to take place at the Hall.
