Superbad

by Babette Decker, The Journal

THOSE tumultuous college years have been exploited endlessly for laughs and tears.

A scene from the movie Superbad

Writer-director John Hughes defined the ’80s experience with films such as The Breakfast Club, Pretty In Pink and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

Porky’s and its sequels, and more recently the American Pie series, confirmed that sex is never far from a teenager’s one-track mind.

Now comes Greg Mottola’s foul-mouthed coming of age tale, a $100m sleeper hit which confirms the teen sex comedy is back in fashion.

Superbad is a surprisingly sentimental story of two socially inept friends who live in each other’s back pockets but must now contemplate the different paths their futures must take.

Accepted into different colleges, pals Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera) try to ignore their impending separation by getting trashed at a party hosted by beautiful classmate Jules (Emma Stone).

In order to impress the girls, they boldly promise to provide the alcohol for the party, with a little help from geeky sidekick Fogell (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), who has managed to procure a fake ID card.

Seth and Evan venture out into the night, hoping to find a liquor store that will accept Fogell as an upstanding 25-year-old from Hawaii called McLovin.

Fogell’s nervous attempt to buy a trolley full of booze ends in disaster.

Superbad is a fitfully amusing cautionary tale that ricochets at full pelt between gross-out humour and touching self-reflection.
