LazyTown to hit Toon

Aug 17 2007

by Jennifer Bradbury, Evening Chronicle

There are two great family shows being staged at the Theatre Royal in the new 2007-8 season. JENNIFER BRADBURY has the details.

THE stage version of the TV phenomenon LazyTown, that has captivated children across the UK, is coming to Newcastle’s Theatre Royal next year.

From May 15 to May 18, LazyTown Live!, tells the story of Stephanie, a bubbly eight-year-old with pink hair who comes to live in LazyTown and meets a zany mix of kids and grown-ups, including the world's laziest super-villain, Robbie Rotten. Fortunately for Stephanie, Sportacus, an athletic superhero who jumps, leaps and flips his way across LazyTown in his airship, is also on hand to help the townsfolk battle Robbie's latest lazy schemes.

It is a show packed with action, energy, and a powerful message that children will love. Its healthy eating, healthy living message has won support from parents for its educational benefits as well as its ability to entertain. The amazingly colourful, fast-paced and upside-down world is brought to life with an all new UK cast playing the characters from the show.

There is more family fun later in the year when hit Disney movie High School Musical makes its Theatre Royal debut from July 21 to August 2. It is the irresistible story of two teenagers – Troy, super-popular captain of the basketball team; and Gabriella, super-smart transfer student and a genius in science class – who try to navigate the tricky currents of peer pressure to follow their dream and score the leads in the big school show.

This new stage adaptation of the Disney Channel Original film features songs from the chart-topping soundtrack, including the UK hit singles Breaking Free and We’re All In This Together, plus two new numbers.

High School Musical features an orchestra and a cast of 34 actors.

It is directed by Jeff Calhoun, director of the award-winning Broadway revivals of Grease and Big River.

  • LazyTown Live! appears at the Theatre Royal from May 15-18, 2008. Tickets, available now, are £9.50-£18.50 and can be purchased from the Theatre Royal box office on 0870 905 5060 or online at www.theatreroyal.co.uk
