Landing with a Bang

Aug 23 2007

by Gordon Barr, Evening Chronicle

FASTEN your seatbelts! Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is bringing its high-flying tour back to the Sunderland Empire next year.

Following its European tour premiere at the venue in December 2005, the musical returns to the venue next spring for an eight-week run, with 60 performances from Thursday, April 17.

Based on the book by Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond, the show boasts a cast and crew of over 100 (including 10 dogs), sensational sets and stunning special effects.

Bursting with magical songs by the Sherman brothers – including Toot Sweets, Hushabye Mountain, Truly Scrumptious and, of course, the Academy Award-nominated title song Chitty Chitty Bang Bang – this action-packed adventure is the story of the magical flying car.

Get ready to hold tight as you accompany eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts and his two children Jemima and Jeremy, alongside Truly Scrumptious and Grandpa Potts, as they try to outwit the dastardly Baron and the evil Child Catcher.

Tickets, £14 to £39.50, are available on 0870 602 1130 and at www.sunderlandempire.org.uk (LiveCard and groups from Friday, August 24, general public from Monday, September 3)
