Ladies and gentlemen...

Sep 5 2007

by Gordon Barr, Evening Chronicle

WHOOPIN’ and a-hollering into Tyneside for the third year in a row, the stage is set for the high rollers of cabaret entertainment – the Lady Boys of Bangkok!

The troupe, with their spectacular new production Divas Las Vegas, arrive in Newcastle later this week for a month-long residency.

Raunchier than Reno, naughtier than Nevada, more vivacious than Vegas, hotter than the desert sands, those exotic entertainers will pitch their Sabai Pavilion in Times Square, Newcastle, from Friday until October 6.

The Lady Boys of Bangkok promise to be in champagne-sparkling form with more than 200 specially designed lavish costumes – everything from fabulous feathers to barely-there, from funky to frontier.

There are more songs and production numbers than ever before, with show-stoppers from hit productions ranging from Cabaret to the Caribbean, from The Rocky Horror Show to Titanic and, with more yo-ho-ho than you could ever get on a “dead-man’s-chest”, from Pirates to Parton. Add in some high-slappin’, foot-tappin’, country and western and the glitz and glam of Las Vegas. Only with The Lady Boys of Bangkok could the queen of Cabaret, Liza “Manelli”, appear with Elvis, or the Blues Brothers meet Bridget Jones.

The tributes keep rolling along – the Pointer Sisters, Aretha Franklin, the Pussycat Dolls, Jamelia, Madonna, Kylie and even Marilyn Monroe.

It’s more than just a show – it is a total experience and promises to be a party like no other! From the moment the audience enters the luxuriously appointed and carpeted foyer of the Sabai Pavilion, the everyday humdrum world is left behind.

You can enjoy a drink – alcoholic or not – sample authentic Thai cuisine, or browse the delights of the Boudoir retail outlet. “Introduced for the first time last year, the Thai meals were so popular with our North East audiences that our resident master chef Thanpwat Phamee is preparing a new selection of dishes ranging from mouth-watering satay to delicate Thai curry and there is usually a tempting special dish,” said spokesman Tony Wilkie.

“The Sabai Chill-Out Zone is the perfect place to unwind! Set under a canopy, with its informal seating, the chill-out zone extends into an open-air area – just another perfect place to enjoy Thailand’s inspirational sabai with hibiscus drink.

“Divas Las Vegas elevates to intoxicating new heights of excitement the exotic, colourful, sexy-but-never-vulgar performances and brilliantly stylised humour that is uniquely the Lady Boys of Bangkok.

“As Sharon Osbourne so eloquently put it after watching them perform on her live nationwide TV show – WOW!”
