There may be cabaret at Alnwick Garden on Friday, but come Sunday it will be carnival time in the town THE streets of Alnwick will be alive with a carnival beat as Brazilian musicians and dancers showcase their talents in a grand parade this weekend. Internationally-acclaimed artists will be accompanying local students in a performance at Alnwick Market Place followed by a carnival parade through the streets to Alnwick Garden on Sunday. The event, which is being organised by Creative Partnerships Northumberland and percussion ensemble Principle Three, is the culmination of three days of workshops at the Duchess Community High School in the town, led by tutors from the renowned Brazilian-German music group Afoxé Loni. The dynamic samba group first hit the international stage in 1996 when its 160 drummers and dancers performed in Berlin’s famous Carnival of World Cultures – to overwhelming acclaim. North East enthusiasts can first catch the exciting Afoxé Loni stage show at Alnwick Playhouse at 8pm on Saturday, August 25. The group now tours the world to perform, teach, enthuse and inspire students everywhere. The event is part of Creative Partnership Northumberland’s project on Brazilian culture Pé Na Rua, which means Foot on the Street, and is aimed at raising aspirations and confidence in the county’s young people. On Sunday, students, musicians and dancers will be setting off at 2pm from Bailiffgate, Alnwick, in full costume, for a performance at Alnwick Market Place at 2.30pm. At 3pm the parade will continue along the street to Bondgate, then left, down to Alnwick Garden. There will be a performance outside Alnwick Garden at 3.40pm and further performances inside Alnwick Garden from 4.10pm.
