Cabaret in the garden

Aug 22 2007

by Gordon Barr, Evening Chronicle

Life will be a cabaret in Alnwick this weekend, as Entertainment Editor GORDON BARR finds out.

CABARET comes to one of the region’s top tourist attractions this weekend. A great line-up of comedy and entertainment is promised at Alnwick Garden on Friday, skillfully hosted by compere Mike Hancock, with a little bit of the Edinburgh Fringe, comical adult puppetry, loads of laughter, a best beer drinking trick, and even Marilyn Monroe!

Last summer’s Cabaret Club was a roaring success, offering entertainment seekers an alternative night out.

Mike Hancock has been producing high-class comedy shows with magic and music for nearly 20 years, performing at festivals all over Europe and touring the comedy clubs of the UK.

During the performance he builds a strong relationship with the audience through singing, foolish trickery and even levitation.

Helen Kane performs as Marilyn Monroe in what she describes as a “camp, unstable, unpredictable display of temperamental exuberance”. Helen has appeared on TV shows and performed at numerous cabaret nights and comedy venues.

Matt Barnard performs as Man of Tweed, a comedy show in which the character experiences comical cultural changes and ends the show with an impressive beer drinking stunt.

The Wright Stuff Theatre of Puppets bring their Ruff Daddy to The Alnwick Garden, in what has been described as “more drunk and moody than Punch and Judy”. It is an adults-only performance.

Frivolities starts at 8pm in The Pavilion, with adult tickets priced at £15 and concessions £12. Booking is essential and tickets are available on (01665) 511 350. A bottle bar and food (barbecue, weather-permitting) will be available for purchase.

The Garden is open every day from 10am to 7pm, with water displays, gardens and one of the world’s largest wooden treehouses. Adult day tickets are £8 (including an optional £1 donation), and there is no additional charge for up to four children per adult.
