The Bottom line on laughter

Nov 13 2003

By Melissa Baines, The Evening Chronicle

Bottom
Newcastle City Hall

"Stick to what you know", said Eddie. And indeed they did.

In fact, they stuck to rather a lot of things but that's the sort of filth we've come to expect from Rik Mayall and Adrian Edmondson as part of the Bottom sketches.

The story, what little there was, revolved around Richie's uncle dying. The show was a bit short compared to previous tours and quad bike jokes and references to the ill-fated play Rik did with Stephen Fry (before Fry got on the boat to France) were out of date but still raised laughs.

As usual, the hecklers brought the house down and ad-libs and cock-ups (the first of which was only 20 minutes into the show!) made the evening.

But the boys really need to work on the Geordie accents, man. Remembering their lines on occasion would be nice too, but then a Bottom tour without mistakes would be like Eddie without a drink in his hand.

Neither are something we are ever likely to ever see.

Surprise of the night was the reappearance of the Young Ones characters Rik and Vivian. I suspect Rik and Adrian weren't the only ones suddenly feeling their age.

You either love or hate this violent slapstick and the tour is certainly one for the fans only, which is no bad thing. No plot, over-acting and unnecessary bad language. Excellent!
