The locals

May 1 2007

By The Evening Chronicle

Relatively new classic rock covers band Spartan are hoping to make some headway in the local music scene, as well as do their fair share for charity at the same time.

The four piece band who formed in late 2006, contain previous members from bands such as The Force, Mcguire and Sticky Fingers, and boast a full-on old school rock sound.

The assortment of musicians who have had varied careers in and out of rock bands around the country are ardent classic rock specialists and are also keen to aid local charities. Rockers with heart!

Bassist Garry Beavers will be undertaking a sponsored walk on May 13 for Cancer Research UK from Consett to Blaydon. The same event last year, which involved more than 200 walkers, raised a staggering £12,000.

Following that the band will also be performing live at the annual Stanley Fun Day on June 30.

Also in aid of Cancer Research, the band are hoping that with enough support the Stanley Fun Day will obtain a higher profile.

Overall the group enjoy to gig, as bassist Garry Beavers explains: "We only got together at the back end of last year and after only a few practices we all knew the chemistry was there, and we have such a good laugh that it never seems like work at all."

According to the band they aim to cover numerous different styles and songs which all have to pass the Spartan test before they consider them.

If the audience enjoy listening to them as much as they enjoy playing them they consider those songs Spartan-ised!

So if you want to join the Spartan Army check them out at their upcoming gigs:

NMay 5, The Victoria and Albert Inn, Seaton Delaval, 9pm, Tickets £2 available from the band or the venue.

NMay 19, Old George, Cloth Market, Newcastle Upon Tyne, 8pm

NJune 2, The Sun Inn, Front Street, Burnopfield, 8.30pm
