Durham City aiming for third victory in a row

Mar 19 2010

Evening Chronicle

AFTER waiting until the penultimate month of the season to pick up their first point, Durham City backed up a win at FC United with a thrilling 4-3 home win over Whitby Town in midweek.

An ecstatic Durham will now attempt to record the unlikeliest of hat-tricks with a win at sixth-top Kendal Town in Cumbria tomorrow.

Assistant manager Richard Ord said: “It has been a great week for the club and we are now getting publicity for the right reasons.

“It was a bit surreal to be three up in the first half against Whitby as we had not scored more than two goals in a game this season.

“To get our first home win of the campaign was another massive plus, and hopefully we can now finish a very difficult season with a bang.

“Going to Kendal will not be easy as they still harbour hopes of making the play-offs, but after the two wins the lads are buzzing and cannot wait for the game.”

A rejuvenated Durham City have wiped out their six-point deduction and are now back to where they have been all season – on zero points.

Ord, however, has been hit by the loss of influential captain Andrew Stephenson, who is banned for one game after accumulating five bookings.

He added: “Stephenson will be a massive miss.

“He has scored some great goals recently, but also his overall game has been excellent.

“Marc Batey, however, will return to the centre of defence, while Gareth Ayres is also back at left-back and will captain the side.

“James Winter did a good job deputising in goal for Rhys Jobling in midweek, but will return to his parent club Easington Colliery.”

Jobling is expected to return after a knee injury, while Ayres will play a trial match for Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers next week.
