Blyth Spartans aim to down Harrogate Town

Feb 9 2010

by Jeff Bowron, Evening Chronicle

BLYTH Spartans are determined to increase Harrogate Town’s relegation worries when the two sides go head to head at Croft Park tonight.

The Tykes are currently joint-bottom of the Blue Square North on 16 points with Vauxhall Motors and, after starting 2010 with a win over Hinckley United, have lost their last three games.

With another home game to come on Saturday against Stafford Rangers, it is the perfect opportunity for Blyth to move into the top half of the table.

Manager Mick Tait has seen his side take six points from a double-header against Stalybridge before they were edged out 3-2 at second-top Southport on Saturday.

Tait said: “We tend to play well against the better teams and then under-perform against lesser sides, and we’ve got to guard against that tonight.

“We don’t want another Vauxhall scenario where we scraped home in injury time when we should have already had the game comfortably won.

“If we give the same application as we have in the last few games there won’t be a problem, but Harrogate are fighting for their lives and won’t roll over.”

Blyth welcome back defender John Brackstone, but striker Robbie Dale picked up a thigh strain at Southport and midfield man Mark Doninger is set to join League of Ireland outfit Sligo Rovers.

“Doninger has been offered terms by Sligo,” added Tait. “He’s gone over there for a week to see how the land lies and whether to sign a contract.”

Harrogate boss Simon Weaver, meanwhile, has demanded more bite from his side after the 3-1 defeat at Alfreton Town.

“We’re in a scrap and need scrappers to come to the fore,” said Weaver.

:: MORPETH Town will give a fitness test to key midfield man Mark Grant ahead of tonight’s Skilltrainingltd Northern League First Division game against Horden at Bedlington.
