Brash and Skelton go clear

14:45, Aug 8 2012

Scott Brash and Nick Skelton both jumped clear rounds to advance to the final round of the individual showjumping at North Greenwich Arena.

Brash, 26, jumped a superb clear round to get the British challenge off to the best possible start. He never looked troubled by a big, demanding course, as the British Olympic feelgood factor continued.

"He jumped really well - he is getting better and better," Brash said of Hello Sanctos. "We have another round and there is a lot of jumping for the horse. We just have to try our best and give the crowd something to cheer about."

He added: "At the end of the day you have to beat the track. The horse does not know what day it is, he doesn't know it is an Olympic Games. You just have to ride the course accordingly, and ride the lane the way you need to ride it and do what is best for your horse."

Ben Maher also looked untroubled in his round, but one fence down near the end dented his medal chances.

Skelton, though, delivered the clear round almost everyone had predicted as Big Star made it an astonishing five successive clear rounds over team and individual competitions at Greenwich.

Six riders - Brash, Skelton, Ireland's Cian O'Connor, Frenchman Olivier Guillon, Switzerland's Steve Guerdat and German Marcus Ehning - take clears into the final round later this afternoon.

If more than one goes clear again, there will be a jump-off to decide gold.

Technically, riders on four faults are still not out of it, while four have just one time fault.
