Wildcats wounded after Rhinos rout
12:45, Dec 27 2009
Wakefield were counting the cost of their Boxing Day friendly at Leeds with new signing Terry Newton among the casualties of their 32-12 defeat.
The former Leeds, Wigan, Bradford and Great Britain hooker suffered a minor calf tear while winger Damien Blanch is to have X-rays on a suspected broken knuckle and prop Kyle Bibb is set to undergo scans to determine the extent of a knee injury.
"It's been a costly exercise," admitted Wildcats coach John Kear. "It takes a bit of an edge off it."
He added: "I'd like to pay tribute to the groundstaff and everybody who made this game possible.
"We're playing Super League in a month's time so it's valuable but obviously it's come at a cost."
Leeds coach Brian McClennan was delighted with his side's performance on their first outing since their Grand Final triumph in October.
The Rhinos, fielding six members of their victorious Old Trafford line-up, ran in three tries in each half as they warmed up for the start of their title defence.
Ben Jones-Bishop, who caught the eye at full-back, and Brent Webb, who made the most of his switch to stand-off, scored two tries apiece, with Kallum Watkins and man of the match Luke Burgess scoring the others.
The only down side for the champions was the loss of second rower Carl Ablett with a knee injury midway through the first half.
"It was good for the lads to get out there," said McClennan. "We pieced together some nice plays and we came out of it okay. Abbo has got slight ligament damage but it's nothing to be too concerned about."
