Watkins ruled out for season
15:45, Mar 16 2010
Super League champions Leeds Rhinos are reeling from the loss of promising threequarter Kallum Watkins, who will miss the rest of the season after being told he needs a knee re-construction.
The 18-year-old has been ruled out of action for six months after scans revealed he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament during the Rhinos' 26-20 defeat at Huddersfield on Sunday.
"This is extremely disappointing news for Kallum and we wish him a speedy recovery," said coach Brian McClennan.
"Our medical team will ensure that he receives the best possible care and I am confident he will come back from this setback so early in his career.
"Having spoken to Kallum, he is prepared to use this as a challenge to overcome to help him become a better player and I think that speaks volumes for the type of young man he is."
Watkins has appeared in six of Leeds' seven matches so far this season, demonstrating his versatility by starting at full-back, centre and on the wing due to injuries to his team-mates.
He is the fourth long-term casualty, joining Carl Ablett (ankle), Scott Donald (shoulder) and Greg Eastwood (wrist) on the sidelines, but the Rhinos hope to have skipper Kevin Sinfield back for the visit of Hull KR on Friday after missing the past two games with a dead leg.
Leeds have lost three of their opening six league games to lie in seventh place in the table.
