Terry targets 90 points

08:45, Dec 17 2009

Captain John Terry insists Chelsea remain the only Premier League club on course for 90 points this season after Frank Lampard spared more Chelsea blushes with a second-half penalty winner against bottom club Portsmouth.

Chelsea's former boss Avram Grant threatened to cast more doubt on their title credentials as his struggling side almost came away from Stamford Bridge with a surprise point. Nicolas Anelka had put Chelsea in front in the 23rd minute only for Pompey's Frederic Piquionne to level five minutes after the re-start. But Branislav Ivanovic was felled by Marc Wilson in the 78th minute and Lampard scored from the spot-kick to earn Chelsea their first win in five games and put them three points above Manchester United at the top.

Their lead could have been even greater had they not lost at Manchester City and then dropped two more points at home to Everton last weekend, and skipper Terry said: "We should be further ahead at the top of the league and we only have ourselves to blame. I understand everyone feeling frustrated, our defending of set-plays was unacceptable. We're still on target for 90 points this season and we are the only club which is."

He continued: "Saturday was the first time we have dropped points at home this term and I want it to be the last."

Coach Carlo Ancelotti praised the ice-cool nerve of England midfielder Lampard after he converted their vital penalty.

Lampard had missed his last spot-kick against Manchester City but kept his concentration to score.

"I have trust in Frank because he shoots penalties very well," said Ancelotti.

"He missed a penalty at Manchester City but he's the best penalty taker for us. It was a very good penalty tonight because it was not easy. There was a lot of pressure on that penalty. He did very well."

Pompey remain rooted to the foot of the Barclays Premier but coach Grant was pleased with the performance of his side.

The Israeli, sacked by Chelsea in the summer of 2008 after taking them to the final of the Champions League, said: "We played well. We played against a team who are very strong at home. But they didn't create many chances and in the second half we had two big chances. But they scored a goal from no chance really. The result is disappointing but the performance was good."
