Swann strikes for England
14:45, Dec 16 2009
Graeme Swann was responsible for both wickets in the second session as South Africa reached 159 for four at tea on day one of the first Test.
After captain Graeme Smith was out for a duck to Stuart Broad and Hashim Amla edged Graham Onions' to Paul Collingwood, England had to work hard for two further wickets at Centurion.
Jacques Kallis (51 not out) batted as if he had never been away in his first innings for more than a month due to a broken rib, but Ashwell Prince (45) and AB de Villiers (32) fell at the hands of Swann.
It seemed there must surely be some early help for England's three-man pace attack and Broad duly had the key wicket of Smith with only his third delivery in the second over of the match.
He pushed a short ball down the leg-side but a little extra bounce saw Smith glove behind for a diving Matt Prior to take an athletic catch.
England seamer Onions was celebrating seconds later after Amla edged the next ball low to second slip where Collingwood took an excellent catch.
England opted for Swann in early afternoon and the off-spinner had a wicket with his second ball, bringing Prince forward and turning one enough to have the left-hander edging a regulation catch to slip.
Anderson used up England's first review on the Kallis lbw call and after De Villiers also survived when the tourists thought they had him caught behind sweeping at Swann, both their chances to query calls were gone.
There was swift consolation, though, when De Villiers fell to the same bowler without addition when he pushed a sharp catch to short-leg just before tea.
