Stunning Sehwag torments Sri Lanka
09:45, Dec 15 2009
A ferocious century from Virender Sehwag helped India amass a daunting total in the first one-day international against Sri Lanka in Rajkot.
Sehwag hammered 146 off 102 deliveries and featured in century partnerships with Sachin Tendulkar (69) and Mahendra Singh Dhoni (72) as India finished on 414 for seven.
Sri Lanka skipper Kumar Sangakkara, banking heavily on a deep batting line-up, opted to field and would have been encouraged with his team's start as they conceded only 19 from the first five overs. But Sehwag got up to speed by launching a brutal attack on Chanaka Welegedara, hammering the left-arm paceman for three boundaries in the bowler's third over - and there was no respite thereafter.
A flat surface and a lightning-quick outfield offered a wafer-thin margin for error and Sri Lanka's depleted attack - they were forced to do without Lasith Malinga and Muttiah Muralitharan - did themselves no favours by straying in line and length.
Tendulkar, relying more on timing and placement, was the calming influence in an opening stand which yielded 153 and he reached his 92nd ODI half-century by deliberately steering Dilhara Fernando past the wicketkeeper for a boundary. He was just beginning to open up when he was bowled by Fernando.
Sehwag continued to bustle along, lashing eight boundaries and two sixes en route to a 34-ball half-century and continued in explosive fashion as he closed in on his 12th century.
He eventually raced past the mark with consecutive blows off Angelo Mathews, taking only 66 balls to reach three figures and, together with Dhoni, who promoted himself up the order, continued to flay the bowling.
The scoring briefly fell at the start of Dhoni's innings, but it soon picked up once the India captain found his feet. He too reached his half-century off 34 deliveries.
The second-wicket pair added 156 and looked to stamp their dominance by calling for the batting powerplay in the 35th over when the home side lost their way. Sehwag and Dhoni fell within four deliveries of each other and India also lost Gautam Gambhir in the final over of the powerplay.
From 309 for one, India slipped to 352 for six - but Virat Kohli (27) and Ravindra Jadeja (30 not out) scored runs down the order.
