Jaques returning to Worcestershire

Worcestershire have re-signed Australian opening batsman Phil Jaques as their overseas player for the first half of the 2010 season. Jaques previously had successful spells at New Road during the 2006 and 2007 campaigns. He will replace Stephen Moore, who has quit the Royals to make the switch to Lancashire. "I'm thrilled to be coming back to Worcestershire in what is seen as a rebuilding year for the club," said Jaques. "I'm keen to not only lead the way with the bat, but also help the talented group of young players find their feet in the first-class game and hopefully taste success during the season." Director of cricket Steve Rhodes added: "Signing a player of Phil's class and expertise is undoubtedly a terrific boost for the club for the first part of the season. "He is a magnificent run-scorer at the top of the order who scored a century in his last Test for Australia. Story continues ADVERTISEMENT "Phil's career first-class average of 53 compares more than favourably with Graeme Hick, which proves what a top-class player he is. "He will give both experience and a winning attitude to our cricket in 2010." Jaques is expected to arrive at New Road in time for the county's opening match of the season against Middlesex on April 9.
