Hashim Amla fell 14 runs short of his second one-day international hundred as South Africa raced to 203 for two in 32 overs against England at Newlands.
Amla (86) shared an opening stand of 107 with his captain Graeme Smith and then cruised to within touching distance of three figures in company with AB de Villiers (54 not out).
But he got a faint inside edge on a shorter ball from the returning Start Broad in the 32nd over which flew into the gloves of Matt Prior.
Under cloudless skies, Smith and Amla set about converting the advantage of winning the toss on a pitch apparently made for batsmen.
Broad, back after his shoulder injury, took the new ball alongside James Anderson and saw his first ball timed past cover by Amla off the back foot for four.
He hit back, striking the opener on the elbow as Amla played no stroke to the final ball of the over. That, though, was the only discomfort England managed to impose on their hosts in the first hour.
Amla's timing and placement allowed him to almost keep pace with his captain, who was soon pulling and driving boundaries off Broad and then in a solitary over from first change Tim Bresnan.
England delayed their fielding powerplay until the 17-over mark, and Smith's wicket fell conveniently in the 19th when he backed away to scythe new bowler Luke Wright through the off-side only to get a thin edge on to his stumps.
The run-a-ball scoring rate did not suffer, however, as De Villiers joined Amla for a seamless transition.
An over later, Amla had his 50 - from 59 balls, despite only four fours.
