England hit back after Tamim heroics
06:45, Mar 20 2010
Tamim Iqbal launched a devastating attack on England's bowlers on the first morning of the second Test but the tourists hit back to leave Bangladesh 139 for three at lunch.
Tamim, 21 on Saturday, scored a fearless 85 in 71 balls, hitting 13 boundaries and one mighty six, as he dominated the bowling before being dismissed by debutant James Tredwell.
Imrul Kayes had already gone and Jahurul Islam followed within moments of Tamim's departure as England fought back having lost the toss.
Conditions looked apt for batting and the ever-aggressive Tamim wasted no time in getting started. He hit the first ball of the day for four through third man and three more boundaries followed in the first four overs. Such was the frenetic nature of Tamim's start, he had reached 25 before Imrul had scored a run.
Graeme Swann was sent on in just the eighth over and Tamim promptly milked two fours off him to bring the 50-partnership up off 48 balls.
Imrul (12) was well caught by the diving Steve Finn to give Stuart Broad the first wicket of the day. Tamim continued his assault unperturbed, smashing 19 off Swann's third over, including three successive fours followed by a towering six, to move past fifty.
Tredwell, making his debut in place of opener Michael Carberry, can hardly have relished the prospect of bowling to Tamim but eased his nerves with a maiden to Junaid Siddique first up.
Tamim slowed up as the prospect of a rapid century hovered into view and had moved to within 15 when he made a mess of a sweep to be caught behind. Tredwell's celebrations for his maiden Test wicket were expected, but those of Matt Prior and Cook hinted at just how much of a scare Tamim had given them.
Jahurul was next in but produced an undistinguished first Test innings, caught lbw on the back foot by Swann for a six-ball duck as England reclaimed the initiative.
Junaid, Bangladesh's first-Test centurion, was 25 not out alongside Mahmudullah, unbeaten on 11 at the break.
