Broad feels hard done by
15:45, Dec 18 2009
The first decision review system controversy of England's four-Test series against South Africa struck with the tourists facing a first-innings deficit at Centurion.
Stuart Broad was correctly ruled lbw to part-time off-spinner JP Duminy as England struggled to 300 for eight in reply to 418 by mid-evening on day three of the first Test.
Broad's gripe was with a 33-second consultation before home captain Graeme Smith gave the go-ahead to query Aleem Dar's initial call, but there is no specific International Cricket Council directive on the time allowed.
England had already faltered, principally against Paul Harris, on an increasingly unpredictable pitch.
Variable - mostly treacherously low - bounce seemed to be the main hazard. Yet in conditions which played to the obvious strengths of pace and seam, left-arm spinner Harris (four for 90) took the wickets shared between a solitary frontline slow bowler on either side to nine.
Paul Collingwood (50), Andrew Strauss (46) and Kevin Pietersen (40) each hinted at permanence. But on another searingly hot day, the batsmen's efforts were always likely to be undermined by a tricky surface.
And following Broad's dismissal soon after tea, it was a matter of how many England's tail could muster to limit the damage.
Graeme Swann and James Anderson took their cue for a counter-attack - and with the second new ball bearing no fruit, the former brought up an unlikely 50 stand with a sweep for six off Harris.
