Batting brilliance boosts Bangladesh

11:45, Mar 20 2010

England's bowlers fought back well after a remarkable display of hitting from opener Tamim Iqbal, but Bangladesh still eased past 300 on day one of the second Test.

Tamim marked his 21st birthday with an astonishing 85 from 71 balls in the morning session, plundering 13 fours and one towering six as the Tigers looked to avenge their first Test defeat with a positive batting display.

He eventually fell to debutant James Tredwell but Mahmudullah (59) and Shakib Al Hasan (49) dug in to ensure a creditable stumps score of 330 for eight.

Graeme Swann followed his 10-wicket haul in Chittagong with three more on another batsman-friendly track, while Tredwell will be content with figures of two for 85 from 29 overs on his first day as a Test bowler.

After a blistering start from Tamim - he had reached 25 before Imrul Kayes had troubled the scorers - his opening partner fell for 12, well caught by the diving Steve Finn to give Stuart Broad the first wicket of the day.

Tamim continued his assault unperturbed but England were able to put the brakes on by posting five boundary fielders, a remarkable sight after little more than an hour. Tredwell eased any debut nerves with a maiden to Junaid Siddique and then struck gold, removing Tamim 15 short of his century.

Jahurul Islam then produced an undistinguished first Test innings, snared lbw on the back foot by Swann for a six-ball duck, and Junaid became Swann's second victim in the 38th over, wrapped on the pad in front of middle stump for 39.

Skipper Shakib was reprieved by the TV umpire after three deliveries when the ball ricocheted to Matt Prior off a combination of Alastair Cook's boot and the ground, while Mahmudullah was busy compiling a confident 59 at the other end before departing on a soft note as he dabbed the returning Finn to Paul Collingwood at point.

Shakib was one run away from scoring a third half-century of the innings when Tredwell won a straightforward lbw verdict as he missed a slog-sweep.

Number seven Mushfiqur Rahim hoisted the Kent spinner for a mighty six down the ground but was lucky to see two thick edges - off Tredwell and Collingwood - land safely. Tim Bresnan eventually prised the wicketkeeper from the crease for 30 before Swann returned to dismiss Abdur Razzak for three, leaving Naeem Islam and Shafiul Islam at the crease at the close.
