McGeechan fumes over injury

Apr 17 2006

By The Journal

Wasps boss Ian McGeechan left Vicarage Road protesting about the off-the-ball incident which may have brought a premature end to Matt Dawson's career.

The England scrum-half has a final Premiership title in his sights before hanging up his boots but was forced off with an ankle injury during the first half of his side's defeat at Saracens yesterday.

Dawson was hit by a late tackle from Saracens flanker Taine Randell 10 minutes before the interval and had to be helped from the pitch.

Randell's tackle will be one of several incidents to come under scrutiny from the independent citing officer, who will also examine a clash between Wasps captain Lawrence Dallaglio and Saracens fly-half Glen Jackson.

Wasps director of rugby McGeechan said: "We'll have to have Matt's injury scanned to see how bad it is. But he's struggling to walk at the moment, and we're disappointed that it happened off the ball with a late tackle."

Wasps will need all the fit players they can muster after a defeat that will make it tough to hang on to second and secure home advantage in the play-offs.

They face Leicester away, London Irish at home and Gloucester away in their remaining league games with all three opponents chasing play-off places.

Saracens' fourth successive victory since the arrival of caretaker boss Eddie Jones to assist coach Mike Ford came courtesy of a Thomas Castaignede try, and a conversion and two penalties from Jackson. Mark Van Gisbergen kicked four penalties in reply. "The improvement in Saracens is staggering, and they are a force now," said Wasps coach Shaun Edwards.

"I knew they'd be tough as soon as I saw their team sheet. They've got some fantastic players and they've been the best team in the competition in the last month - which is why Mike Ford won the coach-of-the-month award."

Saracens sacked Steve Diamond in February and were in danger of relegation until former Australia coach Jones arrived as a consultant.

Now they are seventh in the table - two points and probably one place away from earning a Heineken Cup place.
