Falcons lay down law to Scotland

Nov 2 2004

By Alan Hedley, The Journal

Stuart Grimes and Craig Hamilton, two of the key figures in Newcastle's Heineken Cup win over Perpignan, will not be allowed to play for Scotland against Australia at Murrayfield next weekend.

As revealed in last week's Scrumdown with Hedley, the Falcons will toe the Premiership party line and both players will be involved in Newcastle's Premiership game at Sale on Friday night.

When the autumn international schedule was first agreed, Scotland had three matches against Japan (November 13), Australia (November 20) and South Africa (November 27).

Under International Board regulations, Premiership clubs must release players for those games.

But Scotland have squeezed a second game in against the Aussies next Saturday under the guise of a celebration marking the opening of the new Scottish parliament.

And while the IRB have given it test status, the rules of player release don't apply.

Newcastle are just one of several clubs who have been "advised" by Premier Rugby, the club's governing body, that they should field their strongest teams for next weekend's Premiership games.

Falcons boss Rob Andrew said: "We will not be releasing either Stuart Grimes or Craig Hamilton for Saturday's match at Murrayfield.

"They will both be playing for the club at Sale and after that, and in accordance with the IRB regulations, they will both be released for Scotland's three other games." Meanwhile, Andrew believes the time is right for Jamie Noon to be named in the England side.

Said Andrew: "It's a personal view, but I would just let Mike Tindall and Jamie Noon get on with it during the autumn Tests. I think its time to move on.

"Noony's form has been good, and England have to move forward ahead of the next World Cup. The sooner they can do that the better. Noony is ready."
