Noon: Falcons’ England stars on form

Jan 6 2008

Sunday Sun

FORM might be temporary – but Jamie Noon reckons it will be vital for Newcastle Falcons’ England hopefuls.

With the Six Nations fast approaching, England centre and stand-in Falcons captain Noon is delighted to see all the North East World Cup stars in fine fettle.

Carl Hayman might be out of the international picture, but Noon, Jonny Wilkinson, Toby Flood and Mathew Tait are very much intent on being squarely in the frame.

Noon reckons the best way for the quartet to get another international adventure is by helping the Falcons beat Worcester at Kingston Park this afternoon (kick-off 3pm) – and he even thinks some of the younger Falcons have an outside chance of making Brian Ashton’s squad.

Noon said: “Yes, it’s true that the timing of us being in form is pretty handy, but for England you have got to play well week-in, week-out no matter where you are or whether you are on TV or not.

“The coaches always know who is playing well and who might not be doing so brilliantly at any given time.

“And also they tend to have an idea of what they want in any case, and who they are looking at.

“So you are either there or not there, and it’s not something you can influence any more than battling to do your best every time you take the field.

“I think the key thing is form, and for myself, after my lay-off I feel like I am starting come back to form.

“Obviously Taity is playing well at the moment, Toby is playing well, Wilko is playing well, and aside from that a lot of the forwards are in great nick as well.

“Woodsy (Ben Woods) is in form and we have got some great young English forwards who are doing quite well too, so we’ve got a good mix of players that hopefully are knocking on that door.

“With the importance of the games we have club-wise, backed up by the fact that the Six Nations is just around the corner, it’s a great time to be in form and playing well.

“It’s important to be playing well for both those reasons, and if you do well for the club and we can kick on in the league and the European Challenge Cup, it could be a win-win situation for club and country.”

It might have been a stop-start week at Kingston Park thanks to the New Year break, but the feel good factor of last week’s thrilling 22-19 win at Saracens has certainly put a spring in the Falcons’ step.

A first league win away from Kingston Park in more than a year was a long time coming, and all the sweeter for it – especially given Noon’s last-gasp winning try.

And while it would be easy to view winless Worcester’s trip to the North East as a foregone defeat, Falcons director of rugby John Fletcher was quick to point out the obvious merits of Mike Ruddock’s team.

Fletcher said: “I’ve watched all of Worcester’s games over the past month, and they have improved every week.

“They are still after their first win, but nobody has really put them away yet and they have a very strong side at their disposal.

“I expect it to be an extremely tough game, possibly our most physical encounter of the season.

“Worcester have the best driving game in the Guinness Premiership and will look to nudge us in the mauls, so that is something we have been working hard at in training.

“They will come at us mainly through the forwards and down the middle of the field, we’re aware of that and we’re expecting a big physical challenge.”

NEWCASTLE FALCONS (Worcester, Kingston Park, 3pm): Mathew Tait; Tom May; Jamie Noon (c); Toby Flood; John Rudd; Jonny Wilkinson; James Grindal; Jon Golding; Andy Long; Carl Hayman; Andy Perry; Mark Sorenson; Geoff Parling; Ben Woods; Brent Wilson. Substitutes: Matt Thompson; Micky Ward; Sean Tomes; Russell Winter; Lee Dickson; Tim Visser; Ollie Phillips.
