Tibouchina should be on target again

Jun 26 2007

By The Journal

Ralph Beckett has been enjoying a lucrative time of things lately and looks to have unearthed a useful tool in the shape of Tibouchina.

Most impressive in scoring a comprehensive victory at Bath, she had previously shown promise in the Emerald Isle.

Among her more notable efforts that side of the Irish Sea came when she was a close third to Galistic, who went on to win his next two starts and is currently rated in the 90s.

Tibouchina only had two more outings before joining her current yard and has improved with each start this term. She travelled supremely well at Bath before quickening clear in the style of a decent recruit, and while that was an admittedly modest race, the handicapper has at least been prevented from overreacting.

She has been raised just 5lb to a mark of 63, and since she possesses the scope to prove a good deal better, there will be some long faces if Tibouchina fails to hit the target again in Brighton's WBX.com Handicap. Few jockeys ride this track better than Ryan Moore and it looks significant that James Toller has acquired his services in the WBX.com World Bet Exchange Handicap.

Perfect Treasure won her maiden here last May and runs better at this track than anywhere else, with her latest run being the first time she has finished out of the frame at the venue. That run was over the minimum trip, however, and she looked more than ready to step back up to this extended six furlongs that day. The run should have brought her on and seeing as she is feasibly weighted, it is highly unlikely she will be far away at the line.

Punting opportunities look few and far between on a rain-hit Newbury card, but Gull Wing should fly to success in the Join London Irish At Madjeski Stadium Fillies' Handicap. Michael Bell's filly has put in two pleasing performances either side of a flop in the Lingfield Oaks Trial and looked a little unlucky not to catch Secret Tune at Musselburgh last time.

That one has since run well behind Mahler at the Royal meeting, which suggests Gull Wing ought to take advantage of her handicap mark against members of her own sex. Lush can build on a promising debut in the Enjoy The Game At Tadley Rugby Club Maiden Fillies' Stakes.

Richard Hannon's juvenile is unlikely to be a huge price but looked to have a race like this one at her mercy when finishing a close third on her debut at Goodwood.
