Johnny Murtagh has the unenviable task of filling in for Frankie Dettori on board West Wind in the Audi Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh today. The three-year-old filly was supplemented for the Group One contest at the request of owner Sheikh Mohammed. Trained by Alex Pantall in France, West Wind was a stylish winner of the French Oaks at Chantilly - Dettori's third Classic win in eight days. However, a clerical error has ruled the popular Italian out of Classic action in Ireland this weekend, allowing Murtagh to step up to the plate. "She looks a lovely filly. She's already a Group One winner, and I was second to her in the French Oaks (aboard Mrs Lindsay)," reflected Murtagh. "It rode like a very good race and she quickened up really well to win. She looks to have a great chance. "She gets a fair bit of weight from the elder horses but there are a lot of good three-year-olds in the race this year. "Peeping Fawn was second in the (Epsom) Oaks, John Oxx's Timarwa looks nice and Dimenticata was second to Finsceal Beo in the Irish Guineas so it won't be easy. It looks very competitive this year." Kevin Prendergast echoed Murtagh's thoughts as he heads into the race with Dimenticata. Second at a huge price to Finsceal Beo, Prendergast sees the step up in trip to 10 furlongs as a huge positive. "She's already been over nearly a mile and a quarter and she only got beat a short-head in the McCalmont at Gowran," said Prendergast. "That was before she ran in the Guineas so it wasn't an ideal prep for her, but you take it as it comes. She ran a blinder in the Guineas and on that form she should take some beating. I hope she runs a big race." John Oxx will be represented by maiden winner Timarwa. Despite impressing onlookers when posting an emphatic victory over course and distance last month, the County Kildare handler appreciates today's 10-furlong test is a far tougher assignment. Oxx said: "There have been no problems since her last run, and that was a month ago now, but she's had a good preparation. It's just a tough race for her as it's a big step up in class from a maiden to a Group One, and as you would expect it is a very competitive race. There are lots of good fillies in it so it is a big ask but it will be very interesting to see where she can finish." Timarwa proved three lengths too smart for the Dermot Weld-trained Profound Beauty last time, and Oxx was pleased to see that vanquished rival score at Naas this month. "You can't get carried away with maidens but the form does look alright," he reasoned. "The second came out and won well subsequently so I'm sure the first two are good fillies. Just how good remains to be seen." * ARCH Swing is likely to take on her elders for the first time in the UAE Hydra Properties Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket on July 11. John Oxx's filly, runner-up to Finsceal Beo in the 1000 Guineas, came fourth in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot last week. |
