Henry back in crucial clash

Sep 8 2007

The Journal

NEWCASTLE captain Christian Henry returns to action in tomorrow’s Premier League meeting at home to Somerset Rebels (6.30pm) with a new partner for three of his races – Sean Stoddart, writes ANDREW DALBY.

The high-scoring reserve moves into the main body of the Diamonds team for the first time alongside Henry, who missed both last weekend’s fixtures against Rye House because of the left knee he had injured in a crash at Redcar.

One of Newcastle’s track doctors will try out various knee braces with him today to find the most comfortable one for his comeback especially as his opening ride puts him against Rebels skipper Magnus Zetterstrom.

The Swede can expect another hostile welcome from the home fans who still remember his infamous pile-up that ended Henry’s 2005 season and prompted Zetterstrom’s exclusion from the rest of the stormiest meeting on Tyneside for many years.

Stoddart’s promotion to the number two race jacket, coupled with Jonas Raun’s switch to number four, has been caused by recent signing Paul Clews dropping to reserve.

Clews has completed the minimum three home and three away meetings to received a 2007 average and while he’s picked some vital points he’s swapped places with Stoddart on the team-building list.

Newcastle co-promoter and team manager George English said: “Somerset travel to us still chasing a top-four spot for the league play-offs but, instead of worrying about ruining their ambitions, we still need to keep winning at home to guarantee reaching the top 12 for the Young Shield.”

It would certainly do the Diamonds a favour if bottom team Berwick win at home this evening against Newport – a borderline club for the Young Shield – in a match spiced up by the Wasps wanting to give a debut to recently-sacked Bandit Sebastian Truminski.

BERWICK became the third side in a row to concede more than 60 points in a Rye House home win as the Rockets walloped them 63-27.

Stanislaw Burza was the only Bandit in double figures while every home drive scored at least eight.

RYE HOUSE ROCKETS: Chris Neath 8, Stefan Ekberg 14, Tai Woffinden 9, Tommy Allen 8, Steve Boxall 8, Luke Bowen 8, Adam Roynon 8.

BERWICK BANDITS: Rider replacement for Michal Makovsky, Stanislaw Burza 10, Jac Rempala 7, Andreas Bergstrom 2, Theo Pijper 7, Sam Martin 0, Byron Bekker 1.
