Newcastle Diamonds 48, Somerset Rebels 41 DIAMONDS reserve Paul Clews was the hero of last night’s Premier League victory at Newcastle Stadium as his 17 points, including four wins, wrapped up a dramatic victory over Somerset. But it was a painful evening elsewhere in the home line-up with Jonas Raun damaging his right knee and foot when crashing out of heat five and skipper Christian Henry restricted to five points in his first meeting back from his recent left knee trouble. Newcastle were always ahead from heat three onwards and Somerset’s best hope of salvaging the meeting was ruined by their captain Magnus Zetterstrom touching the tapes in heat 13 with his side already 40-31 adrift. He had won all three of his previous outings and he won the finale as well but Diamonds boss George English carefully made sure all of Clews’ seven outings avoided Zetterstrom. Meanwhile, two Berwick riders were also hurt as the Bandits slumped to their second thrashing of the weekend losing 62-28 at Glasgow yesterday afternoon (Glasgow won the aggregate point 110-71). New signing Matej Kus was concussed when crashing in his third ride and stand-in captain Stanislaw Burza suffered a badly broken toe in the final race.
