Warne back where Ashes trail began

Aug 9 2005

By John Curtis, The Journal

Shane Warne returns to the scene of his spectacular Ashes debut this week 12 years after famously bowling Mike Gatting.

Warne introduced himself to the England batsmen at Old Trafford with a viciously spinning leg-break that turned at least a yard to knock back Gatting's off-stump.

Since then he has gone on to torment England and every other team around the world with his mesmerising leg-spin.

Now Warne (pictured) will return to Manchester on Thursday for the third npower Test needing just one wicket to become the first player to take 600 Test wickets.

He is likely to reach that milestone in front of his parents, who are flying in from Australia.

The 35-year-old showed he is bowling as well as ever with 10 wickets in the second Test defeat at Edgbaston and could find a favourable wicket at Old Trafford.

Warne said: "There is no doubt that Old Trafford has been a happy hunting ground for me during my career. It has got one of the special memories for me in 15 years of international cricket.

"I am referring to the Gatting ball I bowled there - my first ball against England - so whoever writes my scripts has done a good job with me going back there on 599 Test wickets!

"My parents have supported me through a lot of things in my private life. To get to 600 in front of them would be special.

"I'd like to think I'd get at least one wicket at Old Trafford, get to my 600, and hopefully we can bounce back from Edgbaston and win the game."

The tendency for Tests to finish inside three or four days in recent times means that Warne seldom has the chance any more to exploit the conditions in the latter stages of a game when they are most likely to favour spinners.

But he believes he is making as big a contribution as ever to the Australian cause, although losing at Edgbaston left a hollow feeling about his own achievements in that game.

He said: "People write me off and say, `you are no good any more' and then I have a good day and they say I am as good as ever. I just go and do my thing each day and do the best I can.

"In the last few years there haven't been a lot of five-day Tests so you are not exploiting the conditions late in a game. I am bowling a lot more on days one, two and three.

"To spin the ball as I have done at Lord's and at Edgbaston means that I must be doing something pretty right. I am not a big stats man but my stats over the last couple of years, and with bowling mainly on days one, two and three, stand up with those at any stage of my career.

"I feel good about my bowling but to take 10 wickets at Edgbaston didn't mean anything to me. I took 12 wickets against South Africa in Sydney once and we lost that Test by three runs.

"When we are all sit around at a barbecue having a beer in years to come, Edgbaston won't be one I will be talking about because we lost.

"I absolutely hate losing. That's the way I am.

"When the enjoyment stops, I'll stop. At the moment the enjoyment is still there. Who wouldn't want to play in a series like this?

"You are talking about the No 1 and the No 2 sides in the world. "There has been so much hype but the cricket has lived up to it at Lord's and Edgbaston.

"Anyone who wrote England off was being pretty silly. You haven't heard that sort of stuff from me."
