Extra Lord's security

Jul 9 2005

By The Journal

Extra security measures are to be used for England's NatWest Challenge match against Australia at Lord's this weekend.

The MCC yesterday confirmed their intention to augment established security procedures for tomorrow's match at Lord's, which will be followed by a potential deciding fixture at The Oval on Tuesday.

A meeting was held at HQ yesterday morning when it was decided the match can go ahead, but increased security vigilance will be required following the bomb blasts in London which resulted in the loss of more than 50 lives, hundreds of other casualties and transport chaos in the capital.

County cricketers yesterday observed a minute's silence as a mark of respect for the victims of the explosions on the underground and on a London bus, and an England and Wales Cricket Board spokesman reported similar gestures will take place in the second of England's Challenge matches against their Ashes rivals this weekend.

"The flags at Lord's will fly at half-mast, and it is also likely the players will be wearing black armbands as a mark of respect for those who lost their lives," he said.

"At this stage the game will go ahead as planned. Today's meeting was a routine pre-match meeting that the ground authority would hold before any important match.

"Everyone is operating on the basis that the game will go ahead."
