Minnows register historic triumph

Dec 27 2004

By The Journal

India paid the penalty for changing a winning team as they slumped to a shock defeat to minnows Bangladesh in yesterday's second one-day international in Dhaka.

India rested star batsmen Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid and last year's World Cup finalists were caught short as Bangladesh clinched a win by 15 runs to level the three-match series.

It was the first home win for Bangladesh in their 100th one-day international and will be a day to remember.

Chasing Bangladesh's 229 for nine, India were always chasing the game after losing Virender Sehwag (no runs) and Yuvraj Singh (four) inside the first four overs. They were bowled out for 214.

Sehwag was first to go when he was yorked by Mashrafe Mortaza for a duck and Yuvraj followed when he slashed Tapash Baisya's delivery to Rajin Saleh after making four.

Skipper Sourav Ganguly was third down for 22 after helping advance the score to 51 when he was caught by Mortaza off Khaled Mahmud.

Sridharan Sriram made a bold 57 before he was stumped by Khaled Mashud off Mohammad Rafique.

Mohammad Kaif was showing Indian resistance but lost Dinesh Mongia who was trapped lbw by Baisya for 12.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni was sixth out after compiling 12.

Kaif's resistance ended when he had made 49 as he was run out. That reduced India to 170 for seven.

Joginder Sharma continued to threaten Bangladesh but he ran out of partners.

Ajit Agarkar was eighth out for nine and then Zaheer Khan went for 11 when he gave Mortaza another catch off Mahmud's bowling.

Last man Murali Kartik then gave up the ghost when he was run out after attempting a foolish run on three and Bangladesh could celebrate a famous win with Sharma stranded on 29 not out and India all out for 214.

Earlier Bangladesh's batsmen showed considerable purpose as they set a decent target despite a dismal start that saw them reduced to 26 for two, and then 88 for five.

Teenager Aftab, playing in just his seventh one-dayer, led the fightback, scoring his maiden ODI half-century.

He fell for 67, bowled by Kartik, but decent contributions from lower-order batters Mortaza (31 not out), Mashud (20), Mahmud (17) and Baisya (17) helped Bangladesh reach a creditable total.

India had made a number of alterations to their line-up giving fringe players the chance to impress.

Mongia came in for Dravid while opener Sehwag returned to the starting line-up in place of Tendulkar.

Zaheer and Kartik were also brought back into the team, with Irfan Pathan and Harbhajan Singh the men making way.
