Northumberland cricket Leagues review

May 10 2004

By Malcolm Pratt, The Journal

The weather played havoc with the Fosters Northumberland Tyneside Senior League programme and only one game produced a result.

Shotley Bridge were rewarded for staging their fixture with Benwell & Walbottle at The Spa, winning by eight wickets in quick time.

They were set a target of 124 and were indebted to David Jackson and Philip Taylor who put on 114 for the first wicket. Jackson struck four sixes and seven boundaries in 69 and Taylor contributed 40 as victory was achieved from only 29 overs.

Batting first, the visitors utilised all but seven balls of their 50 overs making 123 which included 41 by Van Vuuren while for Shotley, Philip Brown was the most productive of the five-man attack, returning 3-22 from 9.5 overs.

Elsewhere, little play was possible. Ashington were 82-7 at home to Leadgate for whom Steven Robinson, Vilal Rana and Masood Mirza shared the wickets.

Just 28 overs were possible at Newcastle City. Annfield Plain realised 74-4 with three of the wickets falling to Pav Kumar for 28 runs in 11 overs.

The games at Sacriston, Lanchester and Swalwell were washed out without a ball being bowled.

In Division A2, Ryton had 76 runs in hand over Blyth. Neil Robinson (36) and Keith Morris with 54 propelled Ryton to 175-8 with Kinnair and Clark sharing six wickets.

Although Clark followed up his performance with the ball carrying his bat for 34, Blyth were all out for just 99 as Atkinson took five wickets at the cost of only 35 runs.

Morpeth overtook the Seaton Burn total of 209-7 with three wickets remaining. Turnbull (39) Cosstick with 74 and Brown (36) led the way. Ian Smart bowled a good end for the Burn, picking up three wickets for just 23 runs.

Kevin Corby featured in the visitors' innings, top scoring with 72 while Carr made a useful unbeaten 32.

Play had just started in the game between Alnwick and Ponteland before the rain arrived while not a ball was bowled at either Burnopfield or Greenside.

Newly promoted Belsay are clearly enjoying life in the Three Counties Northumberland League joloring.com Premier Division and they made it three wins out of three at the expense of Corbridge.

Derek Robinson struck seven boundaries making 48 from 74 deliveries as Corbridge posted 150. Andy Horner was in splendid form in the Belsay attack claiming 6-36 in 12 overs.

Replying, Belsay edged home with their ninth pair together. Their match winner with the bat was Shane Lennard whose 74 made from just 77 balls included a couple of sixes and eight boundaries.

Chopwell were the only other side to win. The target of 151 proved too much for Claravale who were pegged to 127-6 mainly by the bowling of Karl Wilkinson whose eight overs produced 3-44. Bannerjee, who went in at number three, ended unbeaten with 52.

Batting first, Chopwell ended with 150-6 on top and they were indebted to an unbeaten innings of 43 by Graham Fellowes.

Steven Dargue struck three sixes and nine fours in 101 leading Warkworth to 148-5 from 32 overs for their game with Stocksfield was abandoned while Bomarsund had 200-6 on the board mainly as the result of Steven Thain's 93 at Northern Social who were 75-4 when the weather closed in.
