Durham cricket Leagues review

May 10 2004

By Malcolm Pratt, The Journal

Champions Horden returned to the top of the Federation Special Durham Senior League even though they were denied victory by South Hetton's last pair.

Replying to the Colliers' total of 164, South Hetton were in early trouble losing the first three batsmen for just seven runs but John Leslie (51) and John Pendlington (32) raised hopes.

The introduction of Keith Cheatham into the attack changed the course of the innings and his six for 41 return had the visitors on the brink until David Wilkinson and Stephen Massey played out time.

Marsden gained their first win of the season and did so in style when they hit Durham City with a 10-wicket defeat.

At one stage, City were 39-9 before making 68 from 27.3 overs. Oliver Jones added a degree of respectability to the innings carrying his bat for 38 but throughout the batsmen were well contained by Dave Chamley, David Wills and Graham Fox.

The target proved easy for Marsden and Lee Whally, with an unbeaten 47, and Chris Mann completed the task.

Boldon won a low-scoring game with Hetton Lyons by just three wickets. Gareth Smith had a spell during which he took three wickets in seven balls and the Lyons never recovered, making just 96 as Smith ended with the excellent figures of 5-26.

Gary Adey caused problems in the Boldon ranks however but Neil Burnett stood firm and his unbeaten 31 was crucial to the Boldon cause.

Rain interrupted the game at Felling where Whitburn were the visitors.

Graeme Wright (62) and Daryl Warden with an unbeaten 49 steered Felling to 152-6 from the maximum 55 overs.

Neil Ayre made a good 39 but Whitburn received just 26 overs in making 107-5.

Little play was possible at Eppleton who batted 18 overs compiling 66-3 at home to South Shields while there was no play in the game between Seaham Harbour and Burnmoor.

Silksworth maintained their early season challenge in the Durham Coast League when they sent Houghton back for only 49 to record their second win in three attempts.

Stephen Hansen and Chris Pringle shared nine wickets and earlier runs were more plentiful when Silksworth posted 153-3 in 36 overs.

Michael Kearney struck six boundaries in 63 and Philip Smailes had a couple of sixes and five boundaries in contributing a half century.

Champions Murton won for the first time, defeating Seaham Park by four wickets. Calvin Stevenson, Shaun Smith, Keith Chapman and Jonathan Seed restricted the visitors to 117 but Murton suffered one or two setbacks on their way to their success.

The first five batsmen managed just 45 runs between them but a timely unbeaten 39 from Ian King saw Murton home despite Michael Evans claiming five wickets for 44 runs with an impressive spell of bowling.

Bill Quay posted a near-200 score but with Easington 39-1 rain stopped play. David Hunt hit a six and six fours in 57, Alan Rackstraw carried his bat for 48 and skipper Jeff Tudor weighed in with 34 as a score of 189-7 was accumulated from just 44 overs.

In the Readers Durham County League, champions Evenwood were within five runs of losing at Langley Park. The visitors' score of 220-7 appeared sufficient but Lee Wright (85) and David Wilkinson (50) took Langley to 216 before the innings closed.

Darren Wallis (54) Chris Peareth (40) John Maughan (43) and Billy Teasdale (38) all hit form for Evenwood who are the only side with a 100pc record.

Esh Winning are second after defeating Mainsforth by seven wickets.

Rakesh Dhurv conceded just 27 runs in a maximum of 12 overs as Mainsforth stuttered through 45 overs making 103-9.

Dhurv then carried his bat for 52 in partnership with Karl Turner (32).

Willington had 36 runs in hand of Tudhoe who managed just 109 which included 47 from 51 deliveries by Simon Davies.

He hammered four sixes and a couple of fours to raise the hopes of the home side but the two-prong attack of Paul Chivers and South African debutante Jaco Mong proved decisive.
