NEW Durham signing Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the lynchpin of the West Indies batting, will make his debut in tomorrow’s NatWest Pro40 League clash against Surrey Brown Caps at Guildford. The left-handed runmaker has signed for the rest of the season, though he’ll miss the last few games due to Twenty20 World Cup commitments with the Windies. Chanderpaul could also be in the frame to return as Durham’s overseas player next year if current incumbent Michael Di Venuto agrees to utilise his Italian passport. Coach Geoff Cook, delighted by the Dynamos’ thrilling Pro40 opening win over Middlesex Crusaders on Thursday, believes Chanderpaul will be an inspired signing. Cook said: “He’s a top-class player who knows how to occupy the crease and build an innings and he’ll be a good example for the young players to follow. “If we can win the two one-day games before the Friends Provident Trophy final at Lord’s, it will put us in the right frame of mind for the game against Hampshire Hawks. “We got off to a good start in the Pro40 against Middlesex and played some good cricket, which we hope to continue tomorrow.” The game against the Brown Caps is taking place at Guildford and not the batting paradise of The Oval, which could affect team selection. Batsmen Kyle Coetzer and Gordon Muchall both contributed to the five-wicket win over the Crusaders, while Garry Park produced two outstanding catches in the outfield. It would be harsh if any had to make way for Chanderpaul, but the Dynamos may opt to overload their batting at the expense of 37-year-old off spinner Paul Wiseman. “Guildford is a very narrow ground so it may be we go in with only one spinner as we’ll need a longer batting line-up,” added Cook. “Surrey are a strong batting side and I was surprised they didn’t reach the quarter finals of the Twenty20 Cup with the talent they have. “But it’s about how we play and how we put our operations and plans into practice. “There’s a determination to do well and we want to build on the last two performances against Hampshire and Middlesex.” Fit-again Australian Di Venuto will be looking to improve a modest one-day record for Durham after his comeback lasted only one ball against the Crusaders. Chanderpaul, meanwhile, will meet up with his new team-mates today after flying into Heathrow and will be looking to carry on where he left off against England.
