Muchall aims to leave on a high

Sep 8 2007

by Luke Edwards, The Journal

PAUL Muchall fears he could play his last game for Northumberland against Cheshire tomorrow, but the Durham Academy prospect is aiming to go out in style in the Minor Counties Championship Final.

Muchall, younger brother of Durham batsman Gordon, will be joined by his eldest brother Matt against Cheshire at Jesmond, as well as grandad Bernard, who will watch the game after playing for the county in the 1940s and 1950s.

Northumberland have reached their first Minor Counties Championship Final after winning the Eastern Division, but it also promises to be an historic occasion for the Muchall family over the next four days.

“In some ways I hope this is my last game for Northumberland and in other ways I really hope it isn’t,” said Paul, 20, whose appearances for Northumberland have already been limited this season because of his breakthrough into the second team at Durham.

“If I’m doing well for Durham and playing regularly for the seconds, I won’t be able to play for Northumberland. Obviously I want to progress at Durham, that’s got to be my main priority, but I’ll be sad not playing for Northumberland.

“It’s one of those difficult choices, but moving forward at Durham is what I’ve worked so hard to achieve while I’ve been at the Academy.

“I’ve played for the county for the last two years and I was delighted when Durham gave me permission to play in this game against Cheshire. It would be fantastic if we could win the game, especially if it proves to be my last game for Northumberland.

“My grandad used to play for Northumberland and my brother Matt, who plays for South Shields, will make his debut in this match. My dad and grandad will be there for the four days so it’s a big game for the family.”

Paul, a batting all-rounder, will be hoping to do rather better against Cheshire than his brother has against Lancashire for Durham this week where he picked up a pair of ducks in his two innings.

Paul added: “The last time my dad and grandad both came to watch I got a pair so I hope history does not repeat itself. I’ll be blocking out all those sorts of thoughts.

“I’m really looking forward to the game. It’ll be a big test because they must be a good side if they won their division, but we’re at home and we’re confident we can win the Championship for the first time.”
