Warne back in business but Aussies are struggling

Mar 9 2004

By The Journal

Shane Warne made an immediate impact with bat and ball on his return to the Test arena - but Australia still came off second best to Sri Lanka on day one of the first match of the series in Galle.

Warne's gutsy 23 with the bat helped the Aussies muster a modest 220 in their first nnings.

But he had to play second fiddle to his spin rival Muttiah Muralitharan, who rattled the world's best team with six for 59 off 21.3 overs.

Murali won a battle with the Aussies who had evidently sought to try and unsettle him with aggressive stroke play and will be on a hat-trick when he bowls his first ball of the Australian second innings. Warne, given a standing ovation when he prepared to bowl his first over in Test cricket since serving a one-year ban for taking a diuretic, later took the only Sri Lankan wicket to fall - that of Sanath Jayasuriya, trapped lbw in a home reply of 81 for one.

Muralitharan said: "I thought they played a few shots and were positive - which really helped me among the wickets.

"I thought their decision to attack me helped me.

"If a batsman is willing to attack you then I feel there is a chance for you as well."

Warne and Darren Lehmann showed some real grit to put on 52 for the seventh wicket and take the total to 209 for six at tea.

But the tourists caved in at the start of the final session when their last four wickets fell for just 11 runs.

Lehmann had made 63 when he was seventh out, bowled by a Murali `googly'.

Warne added just a single to his tea score and had made 23 when he mistimed a drive off left-arm pace bowler Chaminda Vaas and edged behind to Kumar Sangakkara.

Muralitharan then took the last two wickets with consecutive balls, bowling Michael Kasprowicz and then winning an lbw appeal against Stuart MacGill who offered no shot.
