Talks to set up title shot

Jun 5 2007

By Duncan Bech, The Journal

Frank Warren has targeted either Wayne Braithwaite or Steve Cunningham as the next opponent for Enzo Maccarinelli on July 21.

Warren is in negotiations with fellow promoter Don King over taking one of them to the Cardiff International Arena to challenge for Maccarinelli's WBO cruiserweight title.

Braithwaite is a former WBC cruiserweight champion, while Cunningham outpointed Krzysztof Wlodarczyk in Poland on Saturday night to win the IBF version of the title.

"We are looking at two opponents at the moment. I'm just waiting for Don King to come back to me," said Warren. "Whoever we get for Enzo will be world-ranked and a real step up. We've been looking at Braithwaite and I'm trying to make a unification with Cunningham.

"Enzo is in a division that has livened up now. Jean-Mark Mormeck, Cunningham, O'Neil Bell and Braithwaite are all good fighters. There are some quality options available to us at the moment."

David Haye is not one of those options, however, with Warren claiming the Bermondsey cruiserweight is finished in the division - despite closing in on a date to meet Mormeck.

"I don't see David Haye making the weight and I don't care what anyone says," he said. "I think David has so many problems with his hands he is looking for a big payday and that's it. We all shook hands with Adam Booth (Haye's manager) for him to fight Enzo and he said the fight was on, but they changed their minds."

Maccarinelli is happy to face any of the top cruiserweights and is confident he has the tools to rule the division, although the demise of his showdown with Haye still rankles.

"It never bothers me who I fight. I never question the opponents Frank picks," said the 26-year-old from Swansea. "I don't see anyone there to cause me problems and I've seen them all. They're good fighters but if I'm on top of my game nobody will touch me. We need to find out who is number one.

"All of Britain would have loved to have seen the Haye fight - myself included. You never know, it might happen at heavyweight in the future. Haye was the fight I wanted because it was about bragging rights."
