Boxers Light up stadium

Jun 21 2007

By John Gibson, The Evening Chronicle

Newcastle's former British featherweight cham- pion John Davison will be guest of honour on foreign soil when North East heavyweights lead the parade at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.

Tommy Conroy, Davison's old manager, is staging a five-fight promotion at Sunderland's football ground featuring his two new heavyweights Dave Ferguson and Danny Boy Hughes.

Ferguson, from Wallsend, is having a return scrap with Dave Ingleby whom he has already beaten, while Hughes in making his professional debut against Lee Webb of Plymouth.

Conroy said: "Danny has been with us seven or eight months and has learned a lot in the gym.

"He has lost two stone but he is still coming to the ring at 19st."

Another of Conroy's fighters Martin Marshall is taking on Matt Scriven of Nottingham, who lost to Shaun Farmer up here recently.

Farmer, a Liverpool lad fighting out of Hartlepool, is also on the bill against Jon Foster, while Dave Watson (Hartlepool) completes the programme against Scot Mark Bett.

Geordie John Watson ought to have been having his second pro fight, but he is out for six weeks with a fractured hand.

Conroy added: "It happened when he was sparring with Marshall and is a great shame.

"He had a smashing debut and was looking forward to this one."

The boxing is out on the pitch at the Stadium of Light and Conroy, a fervent Black Cats fan, is going to make it an annual event.

He said: "For local lads fighting here is a dream come true."

Tickets are £25 for the boxing only and £55 for the banqueting suite with a three-course meal and comedian.

Sunderland coach Kevin Ball is hosting the top table and a dozen former Sunderland players will be present along with John Davison. Seats are ringside.

The executive boxes are selling at £65 and tickets are available from the Stadium of Light and Tommy Conroy.
