Youngsters bag the best hauls

Sep 1 2007

by Alan Charlton, The Journal

JUNIOR anglers have taken the honours this week with 16-year-old Elliott Carver fishing aboard Flamer 11 out of Hartlepool landing one of the biggest ling taken this year, weighing in at 28lb 4oz.

Up at Seaham, Jed Charlton must have been shattered after landing 105 mackerel for 85.8lb to win the juniors’ Loch Long Trophy.

Jed also lost a mackerel on the lift that was estimated at 3lb. And what more can you say about Matthew Holdroyd of Newbiggin who, with fish scarce at the weekend, took a bag of coalfish to win the Clyde junior open for the third year running.

It is hard to believe that Matthew, with a whole list of sea fishing accolades to his name, and who has also been picked for the England junior fly-fishing team, is only 13 years old.

Considering the conditions, boat fishing has very quite good. Six members of the Coronation Cup fishing aboard Mistress out of the Tyne took 46 fish for around 350lb, with Terry Senior taking a ling of 22lb, Sammy Seaman one of 21lb and Brian Wilkes the biggest cod at 20lb. An evening trip gave Steve Davison a ling of 16lb.

Dave Patrick, fishing on private boat Wanderer out of Sunderland, took a fine cod of 21lb 8oz. The best fish aboard JFK was a fine ling of 21lb, taken by Paul Bainbridge.

Boats out of Amble have taken reasonable numbers of codling from the rough ground and a few ling to 11lb from the wrecks.

Some decent cod have also shown from the open shoreline, Mark Sykes fishing at Howick took fish of 2-8-0, 4-0-0 and 4-8-0 on fresh crab.

After Tynemouth’s retired members struggled from the pier, Tony Taylor winning with three whiting two dab for 1-14-0, their Billy Elliott Cup match produced the goods with Doug Spivey taking two cod for 7-6-0, the best 5-13-0.

The mackerel turned out in force again for Seaham’s senior match with 424 mackerel taken. However, they where well spread out – Dean Monarch winning with 32 for 29.09lb and Kenny Newton taking the heaviest, a cod of 3.76lb.
