FOLLOWING another large stocking of fish in the two-pound to eight-pound range and with water clarity improving daily, the warmer weather brought plenty of fly life and good sport at Sweethope Loughs this week. The best fish of the week, a cracking rainbow of 8lb 8oz, was taken by Peter Walker of Morpeth on a home-tied Red Tail Dawson’s Olive. Peter has enjoyed good sport at the fishery throughout the season with this variation of the popular pattern. Boat partners W Glendinning and J Robson enjoyed an excellent day’s sport on Muddlers and Daddies, catching six fish for 37lb. S Younger from Blyth safely returned 18 taken on Dancers, Hare’s Ear and Bloodworm. R Bond took three for 11lb 8oz on Pearly Daddy. Anglers are reminded the Lord Devonport Disabled Angler’s Challenge Event being held at the fishery on August 18 is also open to junior anglers accompanied by an adult. A Gibson had this week’s best fish on fly at Caistron Lakes with a well-conditioned blue of 7lb 8oz on a Diawl Bach. Les Downe, fishing CdC buzzers, safely returned eight for 25lb in a four-hour session while S Jack had four for 14lb on Muddlers. C Walker had four for 12lb 8oz on worm while J Robson had the week’s best fish taken on worm – a 7lb 8oz rainbow. Dan Swales from Great Ayton, fishing a Stalking Bug had the only double-figure fish of the week at Jubilee Lakes – a 13lb 8oz rainbow. It has been a challenging week at the fishery with tactics working one minute then not the next. On Thursday Phil Totten from Lanchester had a great day. He took all of his trout from the lower lake on a buzzer but the fish on the top lake wouldn’t entertain this so he switched to olive or black zonkers and continued catching. This information was passed on to other anglers over the weekend but by then the trout on the top lake wouldn’t look at zonkers and were back on to buzzers. The Jubilee trout have generally been showing quite well on the surface but most of have been caught on slow and deep tactics. FLY BOX CAISTRON: Corixae, Daddies, Hoppers, traditional patterns.
