Nightshift works for local rod Bill

Aug 16 2007

by David Carrick, Evening Chronicle

FISH have been moving up the River Tyne this week with a good run witnessed on early Monday morning on the main river.

However, sport has been patchy with some anglers locating fish and others missing out. On NERAC Waters, Bill Tolland from Fawdon had to wait until 1am to land a brace of excellent Tyne sea-trout.

The first weighed in at 7lb but the second was an absolute beauty of 13lb. Both fish fell to a long shank Black and Silver Lure and were caught in the Gooseholme Pool.

Meanwhile, Dave Maddox from Trimdon landed a salmon of 12lb, while Paul Trowbridge caught one of 13lb on a No 2 Mepps.

Out on Tyneside Anglers’ Syndicate Waters, Yorkshire angler Wolfram Kluge had a good spell with three fresh-run sea-trout weighing 4lb, 2lb and 8lb – all taken on wee doubles in Stoats Tail and Silver Blue patterns.

All these fish were returned. Also on TAS waters Tony Thompson from Sunderland landed and returned sea-trout of 3lb 8oz, 2lb 8oz and three of just over the pound mark, all off the Border Esk.

On the same river David Airey caught sea trout of 12lb, while Colin Hill bagged an 11lb salmon. Adam Jackson landed a fresh-run sea-liced grilse at Sowie on the Langholm beat.

Reports from the Esk says that runs of grilse, salmon and sea-trout are as good as 1988 which is great news for the Border Esk.

The latest rainfall could change the situation quickly, although some heavy runs of salmon, grilse and sea-trout are very likely.

  • THE Northumbrian County Blind Association is holding its annual competition at Northumbrian Water’s Fontburn Reservoir on August 23.
  • Anglers can register on the day or contact (01670) 514 316 for further details.

  • Water temperatures on the River Wear have been colder than normal and there has been an unusual peat stain present, which has made night fishing difficult.
  • Paul Innocent from Chilton returned two good fish in the 5lb class, while Stan Hunter from Binchester returned fish of 7lb, 4lb and two at 3lb, all on fly at night.

  • Anglers on the River Wear have been complaining about the fish passes been continually blocked at Framewellgate, creating an obstacle for incoming salmon and sea-trout.
  • Despite reports there appears to be nothing being done about this.
